An organism needs energy to carry out its functions, which include physical exercise, maintaining body temperature, keeping the heart and lungs working constantly, repairing damaged tissue and keeping itself in a perfectly healthy condition (in addition to growth in children). This energy is obtained from food nutrients, principally carbohydrates, fats and proteins, through a process of oxidation (combustion). The energy obtained is used for all the chemical processes in an organism’s cells, processes which are generally referred to as “metabolism”.
